maybe consider a tubular greenhouse style heater, totally self contained so no nasty surprises.Needless to say,no open element heaters etc. This winter i will be making fireworks in a shed. What kind of heat would be safe to use in a 16'by 16' shed without blowing myself up?

You could consider using a wall mounted oil filled radiator with the plug/socket/switch mounted outside in a weatherproof box,...... just keep any chemicals/powders stored at the opposite end of the shed away from the rad itself on a low setting.
