hey everyone.

im working in Ohio for the next few weeks. i was discussing our hobby with a colleague and he has access to open land, has a fire arms licence and was interested in going through a few experiments

does any know the legal issues out here? i certainly don't want to end up on the wrong side of the law out here as a guest.

also i was wondering if there are any local members and how to get some small quantities of chemicals out here if i can experiment.

thanks that's great.

my colleague already has various firearms licenses and is allowed to black powderer, smokeless powers etc. i'm guessing if there are local sociality he might just be adding another licence to his belt.

I'm not familiar in US law, but I was under the impression that the federal law was relatively lenient for small-scale manufacture if the items are not stored and are used on site. I'm sure one of the clubs I linked to would be happy to clarify. Not a massive amount of US members here, I can recommend amateurpyro.com if you want to seek advice from US pyros.

Usually yes as I understand it, but transport and storage etc. apparently cause problems. The main hitch seems to be local state laws. Passfire.com is good for Q&As on all this stuff but I'm fairly sure their advice would be to temporarily join a local club.

Sensibly, you take advice from your host before risking offending federal state or county or town regulations. If your host is as competent as you think they should know. Some places are totally firework friendly other places ban fireworks completely.

he is under the impression that owning, storing and constructing of pyrotechnics is OK, but its the use of that he wasn't sure about.

his licences are around the making of ammunition, so not quite the same as pyrotechnic devices.

Ohio is unfortunately not nearly as friendly as most surrounding states as I've heard. Ned Gorski, who writes for skylighter, also lives in OH. E-mailing him may give you some insight quickly on the matter. I believe he is licensed in the state, but not 100% sure.

before contacting him, do you think he would be open to sharing the hobby with me and my colleague or would this be asking a little to much?

A PM to Mumbles on here may well get you some connections, either in Ohio or in a near, firework friendly state. Maybe there will be a winter shoot for one of the Pyro Arts Guilds that some states have, maybe there will be one within travelling distance. (inc a short flight!)
