" If you are getting a spherical cloud with your cut stars, you are
either cutting
them too small or using an inappropriate composition.
Try -
Saltpetre 18 lbs.
A.F. charcoal 9 lbs.
Sulphur 3-1/2 lbs.
Lampblack 4 oz.
Dextrine 2 lbs.
Do NOT mill. Sieve your saltpetre, sulphur, and dextrine through 40-
mesh. Add
the lampblack and mix by hand. Weigh out the charcoal and sieve the
other mixed
ingredients through 40-mesh onto the charcoal. Then hand-mix, sive 3X
through
20-mesh.
You will need a lot of water to cut this mix. Cut 3/4" stars for 4"
shells "

The lamp black is the key to the excellence of this star and to those of you that don't mix in Swisher lbs/oz quantities.
Potassium Nitrate 72
Charcoal Airfloat 36
Sulphur 14
Lampblack 1
Dextrin 8
Water 36
Don't ask me why, but by my notes I have the Charcoal as Spruce 40# to air float but being predominately made up of air float if that makes sense,
I think I was tweaking the formula at the time.

A very nice spider web formulae by Mike Swisher.

Beautiful effect,a fast burning star as the charcoal streamers go.

This the formula in approximate percentages if you don't like ounces and pounds. It adds to 100.1, but that's the way the rounding goes.
KNO3 - 55%
C - 27.5%
S - 10.7%
Dex - 06.1%
LB - 0.8
Thank you mumbles,
I will give these a go this weekend
