So it seems the lunatic or lunatics who did this used a pressure cooker bomb with low order explosives, possibly black powder or similar.

 

When I saw the videos I mentioned to a friend that they didn't look like HE and it seems I was right. Apparently you can even make them with smokeless powder or sugar / KNO3. I imagine this will make it bloody hard to trace unless they have some food forensics on what was used to construct the bomb.

Unfortunately, as most of us know, it's all too easy to do when you know how.

 

All that can be done is to be vigilant and bring the full force of the law down on those responsible.

Reports I have seen seem to be a little conflicting.

On a similar subject , anything further on the cash machine explosions, curious as to what was used, the video is saw made me think it was something more than bp.

Yes I saw those and that is definitely HE they are using to blow the machines open. 

 

I saw tonight that they have caught the bomber setting one of the bombs, he has dark skin so I hate to jump to conclusions but it would not surprise me if it was an Islamic extremist. No clue whether it is someone working alone as yet, time will tell.

The lack of anybody taking responsibility suggests this maybe home grown terrorism, I believe this is not the first time such a device has been used using commercial Pyrodex which is widely available in the USA.

I doubt this will come to anything in the US. They have enough trouble agreeing on even basic and sane amendments to gun laws which black powder will fall under.

 

Can you imagine if it happened here though? I dread to think what knee jerk nanny state legislation would be passed. As they quite rightly point out, there are many readily available substances that could be used to replace BP or even home made low order explosives. Are you going to have intelligence monitoring the sale of matches?

Not home made explosive, but black powder from purchased small shells. Up to 50mm are available from any firework shop in the USA.

I don't understand why they buy it this way. Why not just buy BP from a gunsmiths?

Because a firearm identity card is needed in the state of Massachusetts to purchase BP.

I don't know about Massachusetts state law, but I can buy black powder over the counter in Nevada. It's not very widely stocked, though, since it's considered more hazardous than nitro propellants - which are stacked on self-service shelves like cans of beans at my local sporting goods store, in the next aisle from the boxes of bullets. You have to take a ticket and wait for a clerk to go down to the magazine to bring you black powder.

 

By a strange quirk of American law, black powder guns are not counted as firearms! Anyone can buy a 45 caliber cap and ball revolver with no paperwork and no background check. So even if Senator Lautenberg's knee jerk proposal became law, it probably wouldn't apply to BP.

I wouldn't call Lautenberg's support of better gun control legislation a knee jerk reaction to  the over TEN THOUSAND gun killings a year in the USA for the last several decades lol.
