Those who attended the Icarus events in Leicestershire, will remember the entertaining things we got up to.

We have now found a new venue at a firework friendly farm near Stevenage, Hertfordshire - Just off the A1(M), where we can run similar events.

The site is huge with plenty of space for parking, camping, preparation and firing - there will even be a toilet trailer and a large catering sized BBQ on site for our use and it's all for free! - Just bring your own materials and have fun.

Any pyrotechnic/explosive activity that we can legally do can be conducted during the day of Saturday 21st September, but everyone attending will need to sign a disclaimer to the effect that they will meet the requirements of the Health & Safety at Work Act and the Manufacture and Storage of Explosives Regulations while taking part in the event.

Several firing locations will be set up for different activities, with controls in place to maintain a suitable level of safety, so things can be happening concurrently across the site.

We want to have a grand display on the Saturday night, so we expect everyone attending to donate fireworks to this cause.

The site will be open for people to arrive and set up tents, etc. from the Friday afternoon (20th), everyone is welcome to stay over both the Friday and Saturday nights.

Sunday morning is reserved for a compulsory site clearing operation, where all attendees will be expected to pick up every bit of debris resulting from our activities to leave the site as clean as possible, so the land owner will be happy to invite us back again in the future.

If you would like to attend, please PM me and location details will be distributed nearer the time.

Should go with a bang!

Freud. Artists, in this view, are people who may avoid neurosis and perversion by sublimating their impulses in their work.

Hello All,

Having sought advice from various channels, it appears that we can do quite a lot while still staying within the law, so we’ve come up with the following plan:

We’ll have three tented 100 gram mixing areas, we will be employing about twice the separation distance required under MSER between these to ensure we don’t get communication from one to another should an accident occur.

Each mixing area will have its own dedicated firing area, so compositions can be mixed and then carried out to the firing area for testing, while the next person starts mixing their composition.

Please note that only those who hold an explosives certificate that allows them to acquire black powder will be allowed to mix black powder compositions, as we will also be adhering to the Control of Explosives Regulations (making/acquiring flash powder manufacture will soon need an explosives certificate – so make the most of being able to mix flash while we can).

We will also have a number of preparation areas, where fuels and oxidisers can be prepared separately – but not mixed together.  The aim behind this is to allow all the weighing out and preparation to be done ahead of taking them into the mixing areas, minimising the mixing time required and allowing more people to use the facilities.

Right, that’s the mixing set up explained.

We will of course be having a traditional UKPS Fireworks Display on the Saturday night – please bring a few fireworks with you to donate to the show, after all the event isn’t costing you a penny.  We expect everyone to help set up the show and from what people have mentioned they’ll be bringing, it should be quite a spectacle.

As well as the display we’ll be doing various other explosive/pyrotechnic related activities throughout the day, so far we have the following suggestions:

  • Flash Powder Races – who can mix the fastest flash powder (while we still legally can), fasted time for a flash to travel 1 metre – If there’s enough interest we’ll make the apparatus and timing equipment for this.
  • Oxy/hydrogen balloon - Weather balloon filled from a water source generator, flown and fired at height.
  • Fireball Generators – The bigger the better.
  • Rocket Gliders – Make a foam glider and strap on a rocket motor.  Who can get the greatest height, longest distance for keep their glider aloft longest?

Please add your suggestions for activities for the UKPS Experimentation Day - If we can legally do it we will!
