I got this from " The Works " yesterday for £4.99. It's one of the best books I've bought in years.

It explains how,who and when the table came to be and everything you need to know about each element.

It has 240 pages. Bargain.

An excellent FREE book is the Gold Book, and it's not about gold.

An excellent periodic table at http://www.nist.gov/...iodic-table.pdf

Somewhat related, but there is a book by the Japanese artist Bunpei Yorifuji on the elements.  It's a little weird and quirky, but it's an interesting item.  He has personified all the elements.

Also pretty cool.

I've always found the element song with 'layman' illustrations rather funny. Silicon has boob implants as the illustration :D

Dam, I'll have to buy a new mug now, yes my favourite drinking vessel is a periodic table cup had it three years now, I do get grief off it from the domestic authorities For being a "nerd" But it makes me look interesting:)
Although the new names when they are chosen ? maybe handy in a pub quiz !!
