I think the microstars are nitrocellulose based but don't know what the comps are.

I'm guessing that's for the blue ones, it looks to be a bit lacking on the oxidizer front.
Posted 12 November 2014 - 07:37 PM
what about the coloured ones ?
are we sure we are on the right track here or is it supposition?

Dunno that comp certainly looks to be lacking a decent oxidizer.
I would agree on the NC based bit but as for the rest i wouldn't have a clue.

Surely that is a crackling microstar formula?

I enquired on Passfire.
The coloured stars are NC Lint and a colourant. NC Lint being something akin to guncotton

Cotton linters used for making some NC is simply short fibre length cotton about 6mm long.

I didn't say no oxidizer, i said lacking a decent oxidizer.
Kim Bolton lol luv it !!!

The term NC lint really refers more to a purity than anything. It's meant to describe NC in it's pure, unprocessed state. This is opposed to NC already processed into smokeless powders with additives and such, which would interfere with colors. One good source tends to be nitrated microcrystalline cellulose. It burns hotter than normal NC. It's also much easier to work with. I don't know if you've ever tried to screen short fibers, but it's a pain. There are a few patents on these type of compositions. Typically you can find them by searching for low smoke stars. I included a couple.

i have it on good authority that the beans are in fact based on nitrocellulose
as helix stated above, coloured with the appropriate salt
those patents provided by mumbles, particularly the first are quite interesting
a bit of a novelty effect

LOL Vic you missed a bloody good show we put on, 160 people turned up not bad from the cheap seats
I was a bit of a sad git and went over my allotment and fired some stuff I won in a AGM raffle some years back.
