This sort of thing I find intriguing, what went wrong. To close the motorway there must have been fallout on the carriageway from the explosion, not just some loud bang, Anybody else like to postulate...

According to some other sources the EOD did find some detonators at the side of the carriageway and carried out a controlled explosion.

Sounds like somebody from the Catterick Garrison is going to be in deep trouble.

The nearest thing to pulse jet that we have is a strobe rocket.

My brother in law is a civilian Policeman covering Catterick and the surrounding area (he is ex MOD Police).
Their (the Police's) general opinion is that it was probably a squaddie with a thunderflash.

Loud bangs recorded in the croydon area.

Sorry but there is NOTHING that could have been detonated at Catterick that would be heard in Kent and Scotland without being very noticeable in Yorkshire. (Crater and broken buildings sort of noticeable)
Now a sonic boom from something at Mach 6 would be heard at about the same time in all places with no debris. Can't imagine that the Americans would need to survey Britain from that sort of height when they can buy OS map sheets in better detail, but has another power spent the money and brought their Aurora into production and use.
Mach 1 is about 750mph so Mach 6 would get from Kent to Scotland in 10 minutes

If that's a pulse jet, it's running very rough , can't see it doing Mach 6. Almost sounded like a "stutter firing" cake, only a bit too regular.
