Seems funny to me why a student would be doing such a reaction at all.

This particular formula is intriguing because of its simplicity to make and the availability of the chemicals used. This simplicity has made it very popular among fools.

Appears to be very true. A student at Liverpool university was also injured in a Chen lab explosion today

From the updated articles it appears that a university researcher mixed the chemicals whilst doing some research into sustainable plastics. He mixed the chemicals and left them but only discovered the volatility yesterday when authorities were alerted.

I would have thought that the outcome of mixing certain chemicals would have been considered prior to actually mixing them but in this instance it appears that either that wasn't done or there was a flaw in the process which allowed the mixture to become volatile.

What on earth did the researcher think about? He/she should have known better. A pro made an error like that. WTF was on their mind.

Genuinely no idea. Everybody has a bad day and maybe something just slipped their mind.

We will probably never really know. Published reports will probably not include all the details.. However speculation may not be the best way to determine the facts.
