Black smokeburst/naplam effects charges

Can some one please tel me what are in these type of effects and is it practical to make your own.  Commercial ones can be expensive.

i think what you are referring to are a central flash busting charge surrounded by naphthalene flakes

 

this produces a loud bang and orange fireball with much black smoke

If they have flash in them, not a DIY project, thought there might be a nice alternative, similar to milk powder fire balls.

Yes they have a centre core of flash powder.
