any chance of a coloured smoke section ?

WHITE SMOKE
methyl anthraquinone         44
potassium chlorate             24
sucrose (icing sugar)          19
kaolin                                  13

i'm GUESSING its quite close to the composition used in the L132A1 current issue military smoke grenade.

100g hand tamped burns for about 45 - 60secs with good emission rate

ok, correction due, the L132A1 current issue military smoke grenade is based upon a cinnamic acid composition ;)

I must remember to buy some next time I'm in the methyl anthraquinone shop :-)

Where on earth do you buy that at a sensible price please?

Methylanthraquinone Excuse my ignorance but I have never heard of it, bit out of touch maybe.....

Freud. Artists, in this view, are people who may avoid neurosis and perversion by sublimating their impulses in their work.

uk, but no sensible prices.
all smoke dyes tend to be on the expensive side :(

using a low combustion temperature chlorate  oxidiser with icing sugar fuel, combustion rate retarded presumably by the kaolin to sublimate an expensive dye for white smoke seems an expensive option,  especially as we do not have enhanced safety if the smoke is inhaled . medical data on  methyl anthraquinone vapour is somewhat sparse.. Just think how much KNO3 and sugar with a paraffin wax binder/fuel you could buy with that money!! .  low temp combustion to sublimate dyes is brilliant  for coloured smoke mixes but an expensive way of producing possibly toxic white smoke,

as far as I am aware, most of the anthraquinone dyes now used in coloured smokes are considered LOW toxicity.

there are several white smokes considered low toxicity, these seem to be based on
methyl anthraquinone             cinnamic acid            terephthalic acid               km smoke (by Nico) metal oxide/chloride particles        and the newer development of
boron carbide + potassium chloride smokes.

have a look at the enola gaye white smoke EG18 or EG18X,.........they are terrific white smokers

looking through the reports on the toxicity of military coloured smokes, then yes, some dyes have been changed, and also reformulated
to remove sulphur and replaced with sucrose or lactose.

I think checking the msds for tlsfx smokes they are using ammonium chloride, but I thought that was considered an acidic corrosive smoke.

you cant really compare the foul smoke of kno3 / sugar / paraffin, with a properly formulated coloured smoke especially if compared to a proper
low toxicity screening smoke, there just is no comparison.

here is one given in Lancaster, 3rd edition, page 326

                                             Weight
                                               (%)
Potassium chlorate                 29
Cinnamic acid                         27
Lactose                                   29
Kaolin                                      15

might need tweeking for optimum performance.

probably similar to that used in the LA132A1 smoke
