Not quite half,
153 members have posted. ;)

I've wondered about that myself.
Can't figure out why someone would join if they weren't going to post.
I read the site for months before I signed up.

Maybe we could save resources by trimming members who don't post in their first 6 months?

Richard, BigG, any thoughts?

When the major new super-duper refurbishment is done, waste-of-space 'members' will be taken care of.

Ah yes - the super duper refurbishment... and Richard promised it will have an ice-cream making machine in it! I'll never leave :)

Being a member could be worthwhile even if you don't ever post, since as a member you can "View New Posts," rather than having to sort through "Today's active topics," and you get to set your own defaults, eg number of posts per page, so non-posters are not necessarily all wasting space. There are, however, plenty of people who never even seem to log in at all. Do the admins have some record of when people have logged in? That way members who never use their accounts at all could be removed, rather than ones who just don't post (having said that I'm not sure if there are any)

PS, A water cooler would be great too.

That's a very good point.
Seperating non-posters from people who never log in may be a possiblity.
Giving these features to guests would be another.
Both of these however, assume Richard is concerned with the service level non-contributers recieve.

PS-If it's going to have ice cream and a water fountian, it should have a coffee dispenser. Whoops, :unsure: I meant tea dispenser. Sorry about that tea party thing. :P

I see the points made but do you think non-contributing members should have posts served to them on a silver platter? We could even disable guest accounts if we wanted to, but we arent that nasty.

I have just been doing something like this on my little forum which hides in the corner of the internet. I just e-mailed everyone who has not logged in in 30 days reminding them that the forum did exist. Here's the little program I whipped up to do it. It just places the information on screen with an e-mail link. I have modified it to suit IPB so should you want to see who has not logged in in a set number of days, you can just use this.
<html>
<head>
<title>Non Poster User Infromation</title>
</head>
<body>

<?php
//MySQL Database Settings
$config['host']="localhost";
$config['user']="root";
$config['password']="";
$config['db']="ipb";

//General Configuration
$config['days']="7"; ? //Days since last visit
$config['time']=time();
$config['table']="ipb_members"; ? ? //Member table name
$config['time_format']="d M Y h:i a";
$config['subject']="The Forum"; //Email Subject

$config['days_timestamp']=60*60*24*$config['days'];
$config['last_visit']=$config['time']-$config['days_timestamp'];

$connection=mysql_connect($config['host'],$config['user'],$config['password'])
 ? ? ? ?or die("Couldn't Connect to Database");
$db=mysql_select_db($config['db'],$connection)
 ? ? ? ?or die("Couldn't Select Database");

$query="SELECT `id`,`name`,`email`,`last_visit`
 ? ? ? ? ? ? ?FROM `$config[table]`
 ? ? ? ? ? ? ?WHERE `last_visit`<='$config[last_visit]'";
$result=mysql_query($query)
 ? ? ? ?or die(mysql_error());

while($user=mysql_fetch_array($result))
{
 ? ?$days=round(($config['time']-$user['last_visit'])/60/60/24);
 ? ?$date=date($config['time_format'],$user['last_visit']);
 ? ?echo "<a href='index.php?showuser=$user[id]'>$user[name]</a><br>
 ? ? ? ? ? ? ?Last Visit: $date - $days days ago<br>
 ? ? ? ? ? ? ?<a href='mailto:$user[email]?subject=$config[subject]'>$user[email]</a><hr>";
}
?>

</body>
</html>
I guess you could replace the echoed text with the sendmail() function to just mass mail everyone.

I think it's important to seperate non-posters from non-loggers.

I am sure there are lots of people out there who want to learn and don't think they can contribute anything. It still must be a valuable resource to them and it would be a bit unkind to kick them off...

I fail to understand why non posters become members as well! you can access 95% of the forum as a non member.. you can see all the formula's etc. etc.
Possibly the solution is not to banish non-posters but to rather make more of the forum restricted to members only, even if it means adding another level of membership. Why should all the formulas be freely available - yes I know this may sound a little selfish but it is not that difficult to become a member.

Maybe I am just grumpy because I have run out of smokes at the moment :P
