I just found this page while searching for stuff about flame tests:

It shows how to make a simple spectroscope, which can be used to study different light.
I doubt if it is useful in pyro, but I it might be interesting to view different burning formulae through it.
I'll report back when I've made mine!

I actually purchased some commercial high-quality grating a few months ago, but I haven't had a chance to make it into a spectrometer yet. I even purchased a pack of gem razor blades ready to make the optical slit, but the box was proving more challenging.
Folding it up from cardboard is an excellent idea, I was over-engineering the problem, planning to use metal and some flat black spray paint.
