I just made some crackle and added it to a end burning rocket it was total cock up ..i have no more rocket propellant so cant do any more testing for some time ..But the crackle did work so here is a clip even tho it was total failure..I used Red lead oxide and Magnallium Formula and used Far to much as the payload must have been at 200grams or more i used a very long stick to balance it ....

..it made a nice crackling sound pitty it hit the ground... .. To Fat to Fly ..
I also added a bit of magnalium to the propellant near the end of the burn just before the payload ingnited..All i need is now is some antimony trisulfide to make some nice glitter but i havnet found any yet Any body here on the forum can point me in the right direction?..

Wow, that was preatty cool even though it was a faliure. Where did you get your lead? I can't find any because its cancer causing and such. What was the forumla you used for those dragon eggs? How did you make them.

Edit: Which part of the pencil sharpener is made of magnallium? The spiraled blade thing?

- 55 Potassium nitrate
- 17 Airfloat charcoal
- 7 Sulfur
- 4 Red iron oxide
- 10 Aluminum 12 micron spherical
- 3 Magnalium 100-200 mesh
- 4 Dextrin

i thought it was a 90:10 mgal alloy?

Most of the Al/Mg alloys for industrial uses (does this include pencil sharpeners???) that I've come across have quite a small Mg content, normally 1...5%, being designed for maximum strength. So they may not be quite as reactive as magnalium, and certainly won't be easy to mill. Well done sasman for making some good stuff. Tip: if you need a bit of argon to do it safely, go find your local welding man he'll likely have a cylinder somewhere.

Not sure what a sensible offer for the 4Kg lumps would be, but if anyone gets one, let me know.

I believe they also sell Mg/Al scrap in various grades, but you will need to contact them for that. They actually sell pyro powdered Mg/Al but only in quantities of about 50Kg

i have made small fountains using MgAl from pencil sharpeners. It makes a nice, bright effect - more like Mg than Al.

I haven't actually used pencil sharpeners, I found a much more plentiful supply.
Motorcycle cylinder heads and engine casings are often magnalium. Ranging from 2-10% Magnesium (I checked this on casting materials company websites).

It burns well and bright white, I guess the magnesium colour intensity drowns out the aluminium.

Go for the parts of the casings which corrode fastest.

I have no easy way to process it (my hands are sore and my file is blunt ).

Anyone know an easier way of producing small granules? (you can have some)

I will try old brake calipers next.

Yes indeed, but I fear it will only really work on the brittle MgAl (50/50?).
