Actually, possibly yes.

The aluminium may have a coating of some sort (e.g. stearin) to prevent oxidation, and washing with acetone might remove this, allowing the surface to oxidise. However, this is unlikely to negatively affect its use in fireworks, as compared to the size of the particles the oxide coating will be very thin. If it was particularly greasy it may improve it. You'd just need to watch that it didn't heat up too fast as it oxidised, though since you've already done it, it probably didn't.

Hey fellows,
I have a few pounds of pyro grade aluminum powder (600 mesh), and I'm wondering any other uses for it besides mindless pounds of flash powder. (I'm always stuck with the dangerous stuff <_< )? Hopefully some star formulas?

* I got the idea that it could make other effects when I mixed it with some KNO3 and some boric acid, and got some sparks out of the deal
When one plays with fire, one is bound to get burndt.

A quick search on Passfire.com yielded 10 results. Why don't you subscribe? It really is an invaluable resource.

I had a quick look through the PFP Database and found several formulas. There are plenty of star formulas that use fine aluminium as a metallic fuel, such as the barium carbonate green I posted yesterday.

It should make some very nice silver stars if you make the 5:3:2 nitrate flash from it (see the flash powder topic) and add +5% binder of choice (I like shellac, since it's non aqueous and cheap to use) then cut it into cubes and use a 2 stage prime (star : 50 star mix, 50 BP : BP).

PS: Ignore the big error message and just click "Enter the PFP Database"
