There are several suppliers out there from whom you can order shellac pre-dissolved in alcohol (various ratios). Also, places like Screwfix do 1/2ltr bottles of shellac in alcohol. The 'button French polish' is cheaper than the 'regular' stuff and works fine. Shellac is great! Long live shellac!

Shellac rocks! We made some cool lances with it. Although I didnt know which is better, powdered form, or suspended in alchohol solvent. Suppose the latter serves two purposes in a composition...

I've recently been looking at buying some shellac for general use in coloured fire compesitions. However there seems to be a bit of range available.

SHELLACS (Aqueous Alkali & Spirit Soluble)

Aleuritic Acid
Lemon & Orange
Button
Seedlac
Decolourised
Shellac Sticks
Dewaxed Shellacs In Solution
Garnet
Shellac Wax

The question is, which type do i want for pyro use?

Anyone know much about this? any insights would be great.

Cheers

I have used orange shellac to good effect in chlorate colour compositions. I think orange is traditionaly used in fireworks.

Yes, orange seems to be recommended.

"Dewaxed Shellacs in Solution" and "Shellac Wax" sound like ready prepared wood polishes (?) so are probably no good. At a guess, "Button" is some sort of flake or chip grade, which is the form mine originally came in, and mine seems to be OK. However, if any of these is already powdered, I'd take it. Shellac seems to be very resistant to grinding. It took days to grind mine to a usable powder, and that was thin flakes. I'd stay away from chunks, if possible.
