hello there :)

according to Shimizu the burstingcharges "KP" and "H3" both contain 2% glutinous rice starch, which are added to the mixture.

i used to screen the ingredients together, followed by spraying them with water until slightly damp and pressing them, using a bench-vice-kinda press.

is this the way, those burstcharges are meant to be prepared?
or do you simply dampen the mixture, rub it through a sieve and let the crumbs dry?

in that way the rice starch would make sense. ... but when its pressed anyway then i dont really see the need for the binder.
or did i get something wrong there?

does anyone know, how this mixture is meant to be prepared, according to Shimizu?

Skipjack,

Either method can be used but from various articles the pressing method should make better BP as everything is combined under preasure. Once the pressed puck is dry, corn it (crush it) and screen it to get the different size granules.
For both methods the corn starch is acting as a binder which will prevent the mix from returning to powder as it holds it all together.
This is a basic explanation but i am sure you get the idea.

Wait wait wait. What are you going to use KP and H3 for?

KP and H3 are hardly ever ?granulated?, as very little quantities are required to create a massive burst. Even on 3 inch, H3 is usually added as a coat on rice hulls. Same goes to KP on 4 and 5 inch. Pouring them ?raw? onto a shell with shadder the stars and blow them blind.

Some use of granulated KP has emerged in recent years for very small shells (1.25 inch-2inch) but even then, it is mixed with rice hulls coated with some KP and granulated BP. Still, for such small shells, a gram of flash still seems to be more popular choice.

I don?t ever recall a seeing a shell with granulated H3 at all.

Don?t mess around with getting your hands on rice hulls. Use corn cob mix. It is sold @ shops for animals to fill it in their cages.

It?s so damn cheap and easy to get. Let it soak in water for a few minutes, put it in an old cloth and press it. Then you can add blackpowder/dextrin to it.

Gives wonderful breaks and a nice bang.

No, not a joke. Once coated with the BP/Dextrin they do firm up a fair bit and it is not like you are ramming them in a case. I think you will also find reference to this on passfire.

I'm intrigued by the Rice Crispies method! What are the details? Whenever I put anything liquid near them they degenerate into mush very rapidly.

So how can you activate the dextrin in the BP so that the BP sticks to them
