Next the Bromine ion (Br-) donates an electron into the carbon atom which is joined to the -OH2+ group to form the SN2 intermediate. (The Br ion will have to go in via a Lewis acid like Aluminium tribromide for example.)

Just one thing, in Sn2 there is no intermediate formed- it uses a transition state - a minor point, but just the sort of thing that loses a mark in an exam!

Likes: iron filings
FeTi- gives my favourite sparks- great in fountians!

Unsure: Potassium chlorate- yes it requires extre care in use, and can be sensitive, but it gives such good colours.

Dislike: airfloat charcoal- gets EVERYWHERE

It does say chilean nitrate of potash, as a pose to soda, or plain chilean nitrate which are definatly sodium.
Could it perhaps be an impure form of potassium nitrate?

I have made underwater fuse ( for no particular reason, save to pleasure of making it!)

Black powder will burn underwater if is is kept dry- as long as you keep the water from getting to the unburnt parts before they are lit.

I have used shoelaces filled with bp slurry and waterproofed with NC laquer, but I suppose a spoulette would work, as long as it was well waterproofed on the sides and ends.

When they burn, the effect is quite eery- bubbles of smoke rise to the surface, and break, forming a low lying mist over the surface

It might be fun to make other underwater fireworks- coloured lights would be cool. You could probably waterproof a rocket enough to launch it from underwater- of course what the point of this would be is hard to see!
If only I had a lake in my garden....
