For the best 'real' explosions, see modern war productions (Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers etc). The older (50s - 80s) war films still had the tendency to user petrol mixes.
I think now that people have seen a lot of televised action from both Iraq wars, eastern Europe and Afghanistan, they know what a real HE blast looks like so directors and SFX guys will start to turn the realism up.
in Finland, becouse mandatory military service almost everybody have seen real HE blasts live, we can't do petrol explosions to our war movies, or everyone keeps it fake.
simple dynamite/detcord + projectile like peat, are most commonly used.
and yes, that is russian T-34 in background.

Special FX seems to be the most appropriate place for this post, a bit of a showing off my video and also a bit of asking for advice.
I've been perfecting my BP making and making simple fountains and have finally got as far as strapping a couple to a staff and starting to run through a basic routine (see video).

However I only get about 15-20 secs burn off these.
?
for pyro juggling i prefer factory made products than selfmade mainly for safety reasons, and you always know what you get
in Finland group called tulikansa uses red "road flares" for juggling
as you can see from photo result is quite good when flares are used as poi.

It was 25 degrees F, with a breeze that might have been about 7-10 mph. I forgot about being cold once we started shooting though
25F = -4C... and you call it cold?
In this winter i shooted show in -30C = -22 degrees Fahrenheit. and it was electrically fired.

Japanese time fuse and some shell "components" fall under 1.4S.
Ammunition?! NAH!...this is America
looks to his shotgun shells... jup, 1.4S
In New York we have an Own and Possess license, which you can purchase explosives (HE and others) BUT you cannot use them without a Blaster's License
almost like here, to buy HE, you need so called transfer licence. of course you cant get it without storage permits or blaster licence. You can buy stage pyrotechnics and squibs etc. without it becouse these are classified to pyrotechnical devices.
For example:
If you want to conduct a display in New York state, you need to have...
<clipeti clip>
in Finland we need
1. display fireworks licence and you dont get it without insurance
2. permit from local police, who should inform fire department
3. permission from property owner.
and sometimes in night and mainly our bigger cities from
4. enviroment deparment, mainly becouse noise.
so we have 1-2 papers less to fill than you
