I have heard of that before but lithiu carbonate and sulphate salts do not do this. I dont agree with you however on saying li salts are useless for pyro. I have made a good fountain red coloured useing homemade li carbonate and it wasnt too bad. nice deep redit`s worth noting also that Many Li salts are Very Hygroscopic, making them almost useless for pyro in any robust way.
I have Li salts here in the Lab, you have to prep everything ready before you dare take the lid off, any more than a few seconds open to the air and it gets Hot, drop a little and it will puddle before your eyes, and that`s a low 32% Humidity.

If making your own sodium or potassium is dangerous, as it sounds, do you know any sites in england which sells them and ships relitivly cheaply?Yes you do, tried it before, and with Sodium Chloride (but you need two blow torches on the job for a small crucible). Your problem will be that as soon as the liquid sodium or potassium is formed it bubbles and floats to the surface where it burns in a fizzling red/white hot ball (a very slight flare is visible). You need some form of inert atmosphere or filled capture arrangement if you want to avoid an in-situ affair.
n.b. the balls of burning metal spit at you when they are on the surface.
Many thanks

Is the National Geographic Rock Tumbler any good for making bp do you think? it is very cheap and cheerful so i could get one quite quickly. I understand you need a ball mill for making bp.
