MAT is basically "Firefly" with a bit of added Ti to add sparkle in the first effect. Both are characterised by a first effect (willow or brocade) with some silver flashes appearing a while behind the star. The binder is desperately important with both it seems, I found wheat paste to be better than dextrin.

Yup, it's definitely not MAT.
I was guessing the "what is it" formula might be MAT, but after testing, found it only made a coarse/sparse twinkling effect similar to you're description. I think the binder interferes with the combustion of this type of star and prevents what should be a more drawn out effect.
