Hello all
I am going to have to build a new star roller soon as "old faithful" its on its last legs, are there any thoughts on what is the ideal drum speed,i have a nice 15" stainless drum and a 1/4 hp motor with a reduction gearbox giving about 50 final drive rpm, some of the vids i have seen,50rpm looks like it might be a bit slow, ime planning on using the "torro" method next year and i expect a roller with a bit more grunt might work better, any preferences gents please.

Barium nitrate
24 February 2009 - 05:09 PM
I have been reading some old posts on making barium nitrate with dilute nitric acid and barium carbonate.
Posts suggested dissolving barium carb in the dilute acid until no more crystals will disolve then filter and evaporate solution leaving pure barium nitrate behind.
Quistion is what dilution should the acid be (i have a litre of 70% nitric) and as i will have to get more barium carb how much will the dilution absorb to neutralize the acid.
The method sounds simple but ime thinking sounds simpler than it actualy is,if the the chemists could advise it would be much appreciated as i would like some better greens this year

devarda's alloy
04 December 2008 - 07:29 PM
While having a trawl through lindchems catalogue came across a compound called Devarda's alloy, according to wiki its an alloy of aluminium 44%-46% and copper49%-51% and zinc 4%-6%,possible potential for some blue/green comps, not overly expensive even at lindchems prices.
Small shells
03 December 2008 - 04:31 PM
Hi all, when i am putting two halves of a small shell together(2in mostly) i always manage a bit of spillage,(two left hands possibly)had contemplated using a layer of clingfilm or foodwrap in the states i think its called over one half and then it can be inverted on the other half without any disturbance or spillage, quistion is will it prevent the flame proagation between the halves and end up with half a shell being blind, possibly a bit of a dim quistion i know but would rather ask for some opinions rather than fire shells off and be disapointed.
