'Fireworks to blame' for Newhall evacuation

27 July 2014 - 05:42 PM

Evacuated residents allowed to return home

People evacuated after suspected explosives were found at a flat in Derbyshire have started to return home.

A 100-metre cordon was put in place around the flat in Belvoir Crescent, Newhall, after neighbours reported homemade fireworks were being produced.

Up to 200 people were forced to leave their houses after police said they found a potentially volatile substance in a flat.

Seven controlled explosions were carried out by bomb disposal teams - one of which was performed a mile away from the scene for safety reasons.

Supt Paul Callum said everybody who had been evacuated, aside from the three immediate neighbours, was now able to go home.

"We are content that there is no longer any potential danger to residents in the area.
I would like to thank local residents for their patience and co-operation.
Their safety was paramount, which is why we asked them to leave their homes last night."
-SUPT PAUL CALLUM, DERBYSHIRE POLICE

A 55-year-old man was arrested yesterday and is still in police custody.
