I wouldn't use nichrome, the temperature out side will be cold enough to negate any effects the wire may have. An e-match on some visco fuse may work well.

I would never advocate storing it dry, I imagine that problem would be minimized by dissolving the NC into acetone?

Not really, wash with plenty of water and dunk in bi-carb solution, repeat until it returns a neutral pH.

Do you have any other interest in fireworks aside from salutes? You don't seem like your average k3wl to me, its a fact that some of the best amateur pyros started off making salutes and after a while the saw how stupid and crude they were and moved onto other wonderful things.
