I have noticed Ammonium Chloride has been discussed on the forum a while back but I have just got some and have this formula to make white smoke with it:
Potassium Chlorate......... 20
Ammonium Chloride............. 50
Napthalene............... 20
Charcoal ................10
I was wondering if anyone has had any success with this formula? If this composition is either not worth bothering with as it is not very good or is too unstable due to the combination of an ammonium salt and a chlorate, is there anything else I can use the NH4Cl for?

How to prepare smoke compositions
29 September 2004 - 07:18 PM
Sorry if this type of thread exists, I have looked for it but haven't found anything that answers my questions.
I have all the ingredients to make white, red and yellow/orange smoke compositions:
White Smoke
Potassium chlorate......... 44
Sulfur flour............ 15
Zinc dust.......... 40
Sodium bicarbonate ..........1
Red Smoke
Potassium Chlorate.......... 6
Lactose.............. 4
Rhodamine .............10
Sodium Bicarb............. 1
Dextrin...............1
Yellow/Orange
Potassium Chlorate........ 6
Lactose........... 4
Fluorescein .........10
Sodium Bicarb....... 2
Dextrin........ 1
Firstly has anyone made these compositions up succesfully and did they work well?
How do you prepare the compositions? Do you simply mix them up and pack them into a device or do you need to add a solvent and granulate them, or something different?
Also what type of casing should I use in view as using them to produce a smoke screen?
Again I apologise if this type of thread already exists.

Rocket propellant catalyst %
06 September 2004 - 06:43 PM
I recently bought some manganese dioxide to use as a catalyst in chlorate/sugar rocket propellant (7:3). I have no idea how much of it to use however. I have made up some rocket mix adding 3% MnO2 and it had a considerable affect on burn rate. I chose 3% at random but does anyone know an optimum %?
I also have some red and black iron oxide. Can these be used as catalysts in conjunction with the MnO2 or would they have no extra affect on the burn rate?
I was also wondering if MnO2 can be used for anything else.

Thermite Mortar
06 September 2004 - 06:20 PM
I've been experimenting with thermites for a while and have found the most impressive, so far, to be copper oxide and aluminium thermite in a 4.4 : 1 ratio. It takes a bit to light it, I use another thermite (Zn/Cuo 1:1) which lights it with ease, and use a 7:3 chlorate sugar mix to light that thermite. When confined in something like a film canistor the device explodes similarly to a star mine, shooting out huge white sparks in a big flash, much like stars.
I would really like to attempt a mortar device containing this thermite, but it is a fairly heavy composition. So I'm going to need a really powerful lift powder as it is heavy and needs to be very high when it ignites. What am I best using? Or is this idea flawed from the start?
If this idea is too far fetched do you reckon I could make a thermite rocket?
Has anyone tried any explosive thermite devices, if so I would really like to hear about them.
Also has anyone tried any magnesium powder based thermites??
